Sanctuary of the Madonna della Folgore
The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Folgore is one of the most significant and evocative places of worship in the province of Viterbo, located in the municipality of Vetralla. Its history is tied to a miraculous event that took place in 1470: according to tradition, a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary was found intact inside the trunk of an oak tree that had been struck by lightning (hence the name “Folgore,” meaning lightning bolt). This miracle immediately drew pilgrims from all over the area, turning the site into an important center of Marian devotion.
Architecturally, the sanctuary is a structure that has undergone various modifications over the centuries, while maintaining a strong connection to the Romanesque style and subsequent Baroque reworkings. Inside, it houses the venerated statue of the Madonna, often adorned with ex-votos and golden crowns offered by the faithful for favors received. The interior is characterized by an atmosphere of quiet contemplation, with frescoes and decorations that tell the story of the miracle and the life of the Virgin.
Beyond its religious value, the sanctuary offers an exceptional landscape setting. It stands in a lush hilly area, surrounded by oak and chestnut woods typical of the Cimini Mountains region. It is a frequent destination for pilgrimages, especially during Marian feasts and on the occasion of the patronal festival, which sees the participation of entire local communities. The complex also includes spaces for rest and prayer, making it an ideal place for meditation and contact with nature.
