Mount Fogliano is the green lung of the Vetralla area, a volcanic peak rising to 965 meters above sea level within the Lake Vico Regional Natural Reserve. The loop trail that winds through its woods is one of the most popular in the Viterbo Tuscia region, offering an authentic nature experience just a few kilometers from the town center.

The route begins at the Convent of Sant’Angelo, home of the Passionist Fathers, which can be reached from Cura di Vetralla. From here, you gradually immerse yourself in the forest, first on a short stretch of paved road, then on a wide, well-trodden path where the ground is covered with fallen leaves from beech, holm oak, chestnut, and oak trees. The atmosphere changes with the altitude: the vegetation becomes denser and quieter, and the landscape more wild and evocative.

Climbing further, you reach the Hermitage of San Girolamo, a place of great spirituality nestled in one of the densest and most scenic beech forests in the area. Continuing on, you reach the summit of Mount Fogliano (965 m), which offers an extraordinary view of Lake Vico and the Cimini Mountains on clear days. The descent leads back toward the starting point, completing the loop.

The trail is of medium difficulty, suitable for hikers with at least some experience. The length and elevation gain require appropriate clothing and trekking shoes. It is particularly recommended in autumn, when the colors of the forest are spectacular, and in spring for the blooming of the undergrowth.

Additional Information

The route passes partly through the Lake Vico Regional Nature Reserve, a protected area of great ecological importance. It’s a good idea to bring enough water, as refill points are limited. CAI trail markers are present (trail CAI 103), but having a GPS track is helpful. This hike isn’t suitable for small children due to the elevation gain and distance. In autumn, you can gather chestnuts along the way.
