Convent of Sant’Angelo
The Convent of Sant’Angelo stands on the slopes of Monte Fogliano, in the hamlet of Cura in the Municipality of Vetralla, immersed in a dense forest that isolates it from the noise of the surrounding world. Its history dates back to the 7th century, when the Lombards built the Oratory of San Michele there, the first nucleus of what would become an important place of worship and monastic life.
Over the centuries, the site was transformed into a Benedictine monastery, before taking on its current appearance in the eighteenth century, when it was entrusted to the Passionist Fathers, who still reside there today. The structure is particularly linked to the figure of Saint Paul of the Cross, founder of the order, who considered this retreat one of the most significant places on his spiritual journey.
The convent church, built on ancient foundations, preserves a quiet and authentic atmosphere. The convent offers hospitality to visitors and organizes moments of prayer and spiritual retreat throughout the year, with a particularly rich liturgical calendar during Holy Week.
From a hiking perspective, the convent represents the main starting point for reaching the Hermitage of San Girolamo: you leave your vehicle at the edge of the SP80 and continue on foot along the marked forest paths, with a walk of about 20 minutes uphill among beech and oak trees.
